This past weekend we received a small reminder that it is in fact winter. We got anywhere from two to three inches of snow, which I realize is not all that much, but I think it was more than we received all last winter.
It was just barely enough for me to break out my cross country skis and take a few tours around the backyard. I snapped the picture above the next morning when grass was already peaking through my tracks.
The last time I had my skis out was when we were taking photos for our 2022 Christmas card. Our ridiculous card featured me on skis in the living room while Ron used a leaf blower to blast some “snow” (in fact, styrofoam packing peanuts) at me. A fact I was reminded of when I made a second pass through the yard and noticed a mysterious pink thing in the divot my ski poles had left behind. It took me a few seconds to realize that it was a styrofoam peanut that must have been stuck to my ski pole after last year’s photo shoot.
Unnatural objects were not the only sights on my little ski tour. Evidence left in the snow suggests that on winter evenings our yard is quite the happening place. There were lots of deer tracks, of course, but I also saw some prints left behind by smaller critters. Squirrels, rabbits, our neighbors’ cats, and perhaps a fox or two all must make their way through after dark.
Ron also had some fun playing in the snow, and built the world’s smallest (and cutest) snowman on the gas grill:
Alas, the weather warmed up here, and Tuesday was a rainy day washing away both my ski tracks and Ron’s little snowman.
Sending you some warm wishes on this winter day!
