It’s been a busy week here. I’ve been busy working on a big (non-writing) project, or projects, as the case may be. The big important doings that I’ve alluded to in previous dispatches are getting closer to reaching an exciting conclusion, or at least phase 2, at which point I can probably share what the heck I’m talking about, and you will likely be disappointed to learn that it isn’t something all that exciting. So, for that reason this week all I’ve got for you are some random thoughts and such.
So, via John Scalzi’s blog I stumbled upon a bit of a cautionary tale for authors concerning blurbs. For those not up on their author lingo blurbs are those quotes from other authors gushing about a book, that publishers like to slap on the cover of a book to entice readers to buy it, like this blurb on my second novel that author A.S. King was kind enought to write:
For those wondering, neither I nor my publisher made up that quote. A.S. King actually wrote it herself because besides being an amazing author, she’s also a really kind and awesome person. Why do I feel the need to point out that the quote was not fabricated? Well, apparently there was an author out there who decided to do just this, slapping a quote from bestselling author John Scalzi on their book in order to sell more copies.
Sometimes it seems we live in an increasingly fake world, but that’s no excuse for making up a fake blurb from another author to try and sell your own work. It’s a big world, but trust me, this is eventually going to get back to the actual author, and they probably will not be pleased that you have gone and put words in their mouth.
Things are looking pretty green out my office window (well, technically sliding glass door) so I suppose it’s safe to say that spring has truly arrived. As proof here’s a photo of a rainbow from a few days ago. Like last week’s eclipse photo, you’re going to have to squint to make out the rainbow.
Someone who takes photos that require no squinting, is my mother, and as it happens this coming Saturday is her birthday. So a very happy almost birthday to the best mom a girl could ask for!
Okay, that’s all the random thoughts I have for you this week. I hope your are doing well!
